I've seen a lot of individuals who will go around stereotyping and generalizing other people. It's really evident in society, nowadays. I think we all do it without even realizing it sometimes. So I've decided to make a little list:
Just because someone dresses skimpy, does not mean that they're a slut or a whore.
Just because someone is a man, does not mean that they're a rapist, or a chauvinist. (I've seen quite a few women who do think men are all potential rapists, just because they have a penis. If that's the case, then isn't anyone with a vagina also a potential rapist?)
Just because someone is a vegetarian, does not mean they're a tree-hugging hippie who rides their bike because they're trying to prevent global warming.
Just because someone made a mistake, does not make them a horrible person. Rather, it makes them a human being who made a mistake.
Just because someone dresses in gold chains and baggy clothes, does not mean that they're a thug.
Just because someone likes indie music, does not make them a hipster. (I still don't understand what a hipster is, if someone wants to explain it to me.).
Just because someone likes top 40 pop music, does not make them an "idiot" with a low IQ.
Just because someone is Japanese, does not mean that they like anime.
Just because someone is homeless, does not mean that they're a drug addict.
Some of us stereotype people without even realizing it, and I think we all need to make an effort to stop. And some people do it, knowingly, simply because they don't think it's offensive to generalize a group of people. But really, even if you think it isn't wrong, it truly is. It's not good to automatically generalize people. It's just wrong. We all do it, and it's going to be a life-long process to try to stop. We'll never truly be at a place where we'll stop grouping people into one stereotypical idea. But we can always make our best efforts to try to prevent it.
This is just my own little list of ways that I've seen other people (myself included) generalizing other groups of people. There's obviously many more ways that people stereotype other groups of people.
Tell me in the comments below what stereotypes annoy you. Feel free to share from personal experience.
